Carpet relaying is another Melbourne Flood Emergency service. Water damaged carpets may shrink our we may need to lift the carpets.
Not All Carpets Are the Same.
There are different types of carpet construction. From tufted to woven. Fibres are either natural or synthetic. At times, the fibres are a mix between the two.
The backing of carpet may be hessian or synthetic or rubber.
The age of the carpet has an influence on whether it can be re-laid. Carpets vary quite a bit in how they are laid.
Some carpets are glued directly to the floor whilst others are tensioned using smooth edge. There are carpets laid on different types of floors. Mostly wooden or concrete.
Underlay Variations:
Underlay varies from rubber to foam to felt to fabric. Each type of underlay has variations. For example – rubber underlay comes in different thickness quality and the construction can be waffle or solid.
What Does It Matter?
Water damaged carpets are not all the same. The variables discussed above will determine the restoration process and the requirement when it comes to relaying a carpet.
It may be that the carpet has shrunk. Most carpets are tensioned onto smooth edge. Woven carpets are much more likely to shrink.
Another thing that happens is that wet carpets can expand. It may be where the carpet is tufted with a hessian backing. This shows up a ripple in the carpet.
Old carpets have endured significant traffic. It is possible that the carpet backing has delaminated over time. Delamination can be repaired but in some instances such carpets are best replaced.
More on Underlay.
Some types of undelay are not anti-microbially treated in the manufacturing process. This will mean that our technicians will have to lift the wet carpets and remove the underlay.
Wet felt underlay can stain carpets permanently. In many cases it is best to remove and dispose of the felt underlay.
Carpet tiles may be directly glued to a concrete floor. Wet carpet tiles quite often become loose as the glue is no longer effective.
