Two weeks ago, one of our technicians attended a two-bedroom unit in St Kilda where rain damage came through an open window.
How Did This Happen?
The tenant was at work in Melbourne CBD during the day. She came home and of course, discovered the wet carpet in her bedroom.
Although it was late evening, we responded quickly and got there around midnight.
The carpet was quite wet affecting about 4 metres of a synthetic cut pile carpet. The subfloor was concrete. There were no visible water or furniture stains.
What Did We Do?
We were able to extract all the surface water from the bedroom carpet. The carpet was lifted and some of the foam underlay removed to dry over the balcony.
Our technician installed one air mover only as this was a relatively minor water ingress event.
Further Action Taken:
Melbourne Flood Emergency staff returned a couple days later. We repositioned the foam underlay (now fully dry).
The carpet was re-laid and tensioned on the smooth edge. All levels of the floor was sanitised. This included the concrete floor, the underlay, the backing of the carpet and the carpet fibres.
Finally.
The carpet was deep cleaned.
The tenant remarked that you could not see where the carpet got wet. She was doubly pleased as she was not sure how her landlord would respond to this mishap.
Conclusion:
When we attend a rain damage event, it is quite often easy to restore the carpets. However, not every case is that simple.
If our callout was delayed or the rain damage was discovered too late, the carpet may not have been restorable. Sometimes furniture will stain a carpet permanently.
