Our water damage restoration team was called out to Vermont recently. It seemed routine and not very urgent.
What Did We Find?
The property was a four-bedroom house. In the middle of the loungeroom stood an aquarium that spilt all its water onto the lounge carpet and into the hallway. The poor fish did not make the ordeal. The empty fish tank contained around 200 litres of water.
The contaminated water smell greeted our staff at the front door.
Our Inspection Found the Following.
After inspecting all the affected carpets and contents, the verdict was not good.
The lounge & hall carpets and underlay were not restorable. There were also two compressed wood bookcases that were beyond salvage.
The bottom of the skirting boards was also affected. However, no moisture readings were found in the gyprock walls.
The Claim Lodgement.
The owner of the house confirmed that he had building and contents insurance. We got him to contact his insurance company to make a claim. Once the claim was logged in the system, we started the restoration/disposal process.
What Did We Do?
All cleanable contents were moved to a dry part of the house. All the books in the bookcases were stored in this part of the home too.
We measured the rooms and took photographs for insurance purposes. The damaged bookcases were moved to the nature strip of the home.
The next thing we did was to extract the carpet as much as possible. The carpet in both rooms were then cut into strips and rolled up and placed next to the bookcases.
The same activity was carried out with the rubber underlay. Damaged skirting boards were taken out as well as all smooth edge in the affected rooms.
Once exposed, the concrete floors were disinfected with our hospital-grade disinfectant.
The Machine Drying Process.
We installed 4 air movers and two large dehumidifiers to dry the floors. 3 air movers and two dehumidifier in the lounge room and 1 air mover in the hall.
Our restoration team returned to measure moisture levels after 3 days. The good news was that it was all dry.
Further Work.
The rubbish removal task was completed on our return.
We got the policyholder to sign off on our work. As promised, we sent our comprehensive report to both the insured and their insurance company.
Yet another restoration task completed.
